I think the vevor/acciaio or infamous "blue" anvils are the perfect beginner option. Being able to do beginner projects like bottle openers and hooks without having to improvise a bending jig or a non flammable conical object to form a ring would definitely make a first experience better IMHO. Now I'm in no way suggesting that someone who's never tried before go out and pay $2500 for a fontanini or $1500 for some oiled up hay Budden, but I think having the anatomy of an anvil is valuable to a beginner. I think starting with an indescript hunk of steel could make a beginners initial experience even more frustrating than it already will be when they realize that their expectations and aspirations aren't realistic because they can't make Damascus or pump out a sword on their first day at the forge.
